Every citizen of Dare County owes it to themselves to listen to the December 6th broadcast on North Carolina Public Radio where host Frank Stasio interviews Dare County Commissioner Allen Burrus, Western Carolina University's Rob Young and Derb Cater, attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center regarding the future of Hwy 12 on Hatteras Island.  It's a gripping interview that, in the end, begs the question as to why our Dare County Commissioners, and especially Burrus, are knocking their heads against the wall, trying to deny the inevitable, that "Highway 12 is in deep trouble and things aren't going to get any better", despite what may or may not be done about pushing up dunes, spot replenishment of sand on the beach and/or building two additional elevated bridges at the new inlet and Mirlo Beach.

The county, state and federal government need to start looking at other alternatives that provide for long term solutions, said Young, adding that the beaches on Hatteras Island will continue to erode and the threats of newer inlets will become more prevalent.

If listeners can get past Burrus's interruptions and personal attacks, this interview, in the opinion of this writer, is a masterpiece.
