CDC director suspended over endorsement e-mail « The Outer Banks Voice

Looks like the editors of the Outer Banks Voice haven't gotten out of bed yet. Bob Muller's incessant campaign button is still flashing over on the website. Gawd!!!...it's going to be even worse than before, having to drive down the highway this morning and see all those campaign signs. Someone is going to make big bucks selling all those metal hangers to the salvage yards.

Come on candidates, let's clean'em up!  Please!

Why It won't work to just Buy the homes that are on the beach

To contact us Click HERE
There have been a couple of times lately when I have responded to a comment on Eye on Dare, and my comment never shows up. That's a little frustrating, but it's not my space, so I can't really complain.

But some recent posts have suggested that we buy the homes that are currently on the beach, and when my response wasn't printed - well, I guess you always win an argument if you only show one side. There's also the anonymous person who says I'm a swindler, and they won't shop in Nags Head anymore, or buy anything from a business owner that supports beach nourishment. Too bad they don't have the courage to put their name out there.

So I've restarted this blog, after a long rest. These are my opinions and thoughts, not the Town of Nags Head or any of my partners. I hope to use this blog as a tool to work on two current committees, the Beach Road committee and the Beach Plan committee, and I'll be posting notes from recent meetings to stir discussion here.

Anyway, here's my response to buying and moving the homes currently on the beach:

It's not about the houses that are on the beach right now. There's no doubt we could buy the homes that are on the public beach right now.

But follow this method of dealing with erosion for the next 50 years, and where do you end up? At the beach road, just like in Kitty Hawk, with no oceanfront homes to generate the tax dollars that feed

Nags Head is just first in line to address the biggest short and long term problem for the whole county, erosion. As a community, we've wallowed at a crossroads for the past 20 years. I hope we can make a choice now on a consistent and effective way to minimize the damage from erosion.

As far as being a swindle, well, in a swindle, you don't know what's happening. In the erosion issue, there's so much information it's overwhelming.Start with the EIS on the Town website, www.townofnagshead.net. This has been an open discussion all the way through. Shucks, Ray posted my draft plan on Eye on Dare before I gave it to my Board. Just because there is disagreement doesn't have to mean there can't be a polite and public discussion. I don't think anonymity encourages politeness, so if you would like your comment posted, please offer your name. Yes, I'll post all of them, even the ones that disagree. I think you frequently learn the most from the folks that honestly disagree, and you learn their assumptions, and question your own premises. It's healthy.

View Of The Sound As The Sun Goes Down

video

There's a fun time to be had while you are on the Outer Banks! This video clip was taken during a short kayak trip on the soundside of the beach. We're famous for our watersports--kiteboarding, fishing, kayaking, jet skiing and more.

There are also great historic programs going on at the beach as well. Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station has "Porch Programs" going on all summer at 2 pm. For instance on Tuesdays there a talk given on "Amazing True & Local Wreck Rescue Stories." And on Thursdays the ever-popular "Beach Apparatus Drill" with the US Coast Guard re-creates the famous "Breeches Buoy" Rescue--and is only 1 of 2 spots in America to do so (and we're the only one to have active Coast Guard personnel in our rescue).

Of course you can always just laze the day away in the sun too. That's what most visitors seem to enjoy. Or take a day trip and drive south towards Hatteras and grab some lunch before visiting the Lighthouse, there's a nice seashore there where you can take a respite...then jump on the free ferry to Ocracoke and visit the quaint fishing village with fine local shopping and restaurants.

And if you are on a budget, take advantage of our great special offers at our various properties at: obxlodging.com. We have cottages, guest rooms and suites with full kitchens---the whole gamut for something for 1 person to something for 18!

Billy Casper Golf Launches BCGreen Environmental Program

To contact us Click HERE

(VIENNA, VA) - Billy Casper Golf (BCG) - owner and operator of more than 140 golf courses, country clubs and resorts - has launched BCGreen to reduce the carbon footprint at all its properties across America.

Further bolstering the company's industry-leading environmental standing, BCGreen builds on participation in Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses in four key areas: gasoline and diesel consumption, electricity and water reduction, heating and cooling efficiencies, and recycling.

Each BCG course is performing an audit to determine its carbon footprint. Upon establishing a baseline, agronomy teams will further reduce carbon impact on the environment by installing low-flow faucets, compact fluorescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats, dimmers, timers and motion detectors on indoor and outdoor lighting, and creating on-site compost piles.

To oversee BCGreen, Mark Murphy - Superintendent at BCG-managed General's Ridge Golf Course (Manassas Park, VA) - has been named Director of Environmental Programs. Murphy directed Audubon certification at multiple BCG-managed courses in Northern Virginia and introduced additional agronomic initiatives benefitting the ecosystem.

"Billy Casper Golf's commitment to leading-edge environmental stewardship is unmatched in the industry," says Bryan Bielecki, Vice President of Agronomy of BCG. "We are dedicated to understanding our impact and creating ecologically-friendly sanctuaries within our communities."

In 2009, BCG began registering courses in the Audubon International program and has 100 percent of courses enrolled. In attaining certification, BCG courses successfully maintain sound environmental practices in six disciplines: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, and water quality management.

BCG has long been lauded by golfers and industry pundits for conditioning courses to high standards with many winning best-in-kind honors from Golf Digest, GOLF Magazine and Golfweek. An industry leader in maintenance best practices combined with business prudency, several BCG superintendents have joined the company from PGA Tour and "major" tournament venues, and other top-ranked courses nationwide.

Pig Pickin'--Nags Head Surf Fishing Club

To contact us Click HERE

I've been out of town a lot lately, so the blog has really taken a back seat to The Voice. But last month, I did to get attend the annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Club meeting, which is always held at the Old Nags Head Cove clubhouse on the sound.

Ironically, the gatherig--part awards ceremony for the Member-Guest tournament held that day, part meeting, and mostly eating--does not feature fish on the dinner menu. Instead, for the past several years, Jimmy Jackson--a club member and resident of both Dare and Pasquotank counties has generously donated his time to slow-cook a whole pig over the course of the morning and most of the afternoon. For those who have never seen what this looks like, here are some pix, as well as the gorgeous view from the neighborhood's club house.

Sunday--Barnes Street

To contact us Click HERE
I bought a new DSLR in the spring for use in the Voice. I've been playing with the telephoto lenses and other add-ons just to get used to them. The waves last Sunday at Barnes Street in Nags Head were far-from-gnarly; in fact, mostly non-existent. I'd guess about 1-2 feet about the time I got there (around 5:30 PM). Even folks on those sponge-board "starter" surfboards had a difficult time getting a ride. But, once in a while, even a small wave had a long enough break to catch a reasonably long, if not life-threatening ride. [Click on image to get a larger image]

Skim boarders were giving it their best, but the small waves led to even smaller shore break. The new breed of skimmers (as opposed to my age group, some thirty years ago) likes to skim the shore then turn into the shore break. If the break is large enough, they can pull a U-turn and "surf" the skim back to shore on the break..or, if the shore break is really large and the water deeper, they will ride into the break, launch from the board and perform aerial somersaults and other acrobatics in the one foot deep water. Today, just skimming and a slow, boring fade away...but the water droplets on the pix are pretty cool!

Skeeter's Redux

My third "Asian" night at Skeeter's on Colington Road. This has to be the among the best kept OBX secrets among locals and the few tourists who have discovered this restaurant.

So tonight I sent in two orders of fried pork wontons. Scarfed them right down.

A third appetizer was described merely as "Asian scallops". I have no idea what the spices were, or the white sauce drizzled on each. I could tell they were pan seared, and perfectly executed. And the combination of spices and drizzle made them fall easily into the the Top 5 scallop dishes I have ever had the pleasure to consume.

I am serious folks..you need to visit, adopt, and support this restaurant. I've heard the same praises from those who prefer Wednesday Taco's or Friday Prime Rib. Give these guys the props they dserve!

Intrepid Journalists Stage Return Engagement, Vow to Leave No Golf Balls Behind
(Portland, Ore.) – Golf Media Network and The A Position.com concludes its Golf Road Warriors program for 2012 with a return visit to Scottsdale—described as “the world’s finest golf destination,” and site of a December 2011 visit.  Golf Road Warriors is an interactive multi-platform golf adventure in which four journalists and a videographer create and broadcast daily original content via a collection of websites and social media that is further disseminated by sponsor partners.  The content includes short travelogues, videos, and reviews of courses, restaurants, and other attractions, as well as the observations of a team of seasoned golf journalists.

Writers participating in this edition of Golf Road Warriors include Las Vegas radio and television personality Dennis Silvers; California writer Jay Stuller; Jeff Wallach, Founder and Executive Editor of The A Position; and Tom Harack, one of the most widely-traveled golf writers on the planet.  The writers will play golf courses including Talking Stick, The Phoenician, Kierland Golf Club, SunRidge Canyon, and The Raven Phoenix Golf Club; get fit for new sticks at Cool Clubs; hope for improvement at a Jim McLean golf clinic; and take on hiking and culinary challenges. Their exploits will be captured on film by award-winning videographer and producer Jamie McWilliams.

Sponsors for the trip include the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, the official destination marketing partner for the city; The Antigua Group, a leader of genuine golf, sport and lifestyle apparel, which will provide daily ‘uniforms’ for the writers; Hemispheres Magazine, the award-winning in-flight publication of United Airlines; and the Salute Military Golf Association, providing rehabilitative golf experiences for wounded veterans.  Several wounded veterans will join the writers for golf en route.

The Sun News - the daily newspaper of record for the area - polled local residents and visitors about their favorite area establishments for the annual "Best of the Beach" rankings. Categories included golf facilities, restaurants, business entities and attractions.

"The Witch is a special place to tee it up and we're thrilled to be honored with the first place award in The Sun News poll, especially given the large number of courses in the area," says Claude Pardue, President and CEO. "Our reputation as the best golf value on The Grand Strand is as important to us as providing great course maintenance and unrivaled customer service."

No stranger to regional and national acclaim, The Witch has also been named "Best Value" in Myrtle Beach by GOLF Magazine and awarded 4-1/2 stars by Golf Digest.

Please!

Dare County Getting "Down & Dirty"

To contact us Click HERE
The Dare County Tax Office has gotten "down and dirty" with the taxpayers of this county!
If you are a real property owner, who, like the vast majority people in Dare County, chose to wait and pay your 2012 taxes until later in the year (the taxes don't become delinquent until after December 30th), you probably got a bold-red-lettered, threatening bill in your mailbox today, stating it is the 2nd NOTICE FOR YOUR 2012 TAX BILL!

This is the first time Dare County has ever sent out this kind of threatening notice, and no doubt, many found it JOLTING when they opened the envelope!  What is going on with the Dare County Tax Office?

Have they been instructed by the county manager or county commissioners to suck as much money as fast as they can from Dare taxpayers?  There is nothing illegal about taxpayers waiting until the last minute to pay their property taxes, and given the way Dare County fritters it away, it's no wonder people hang on to their money as long as possible.

EOD, for one, never pays his annual property taxes until the end of December. And, frankly, he wonders how much money Dare County wasted by sending out these absurd, demanding notices!

The first notice, sent to each property owner in the county was sufficient enough. Why is Dare County taking such an unsavory approach to tax collection, especially given the fact that most taxpayers in the county will be soaked bad enough when the new reval figures and tax rates comes out after the first of the year!

Gee Whiz !!!

"Bon Voyage" Commissioner Mike Johnson

To contact us Click HERE
Clearly unwilling to cancel his annual hunting trip to South Dakota, Commissioner Mike Johnson made an unusual departure last week, in vacating the District 2 seat he has held for the past eight years. Johnson had the board clerk play a farewell audio tape to the remaining six commissioners who were present and apparently thought it was the thing to do and be present and earn their monthly salary.
Commissioner Mike Johnson
In the eight years Johnson has sat on the board, he has missed being absent in November only once, in 2005. Likewise, his absentee status from other board meetings throughout his tenure easily places him at the top with regards to commissioner truancy.  However, the taxpayers shouldn't expect any monetary restitution to come forth from Johnson, who, from time to time, had some problems getting his county "travel" expenses in order.

Back to the audio. Johnson told each commissioner, including past ones with whom he had served how wonderful each had been to him and how much he had enjoyed serving with them, especially the deceased Hatteras Island commissioner, Joseph "Mac" Midgett, whom Johnson described as "the greatest commissioner of all time" (?????--EOD will agree that Midgett and Johnson's "thought processes", a favorite term, often used by Commissioner Allen Burrus, did seem to run along the same lines).

Johnson also praised the county employees and told them if he owned a corporation he would be proud to have any of them work for him.

In response to his remarks, Commissioner Allen Burrus said, "It's been interesting serving with him".
Commissioner Max Dutton echoed, "going to miss Mike, he always kept things very interesting, to say the least". Commissioner Jack Shea called Johnson, "a great asset to Dare County". Commissioner Virginia Tillett said Johnson was "a good board member to me" and she would miss him.

Johnson won election to the county board eight years ago, defeating Renee Cahoon, who, at the time, had alienated many taxpayers with her stance on some new schools building proposals.  He ran, using a conservative Christian approach, and was later credited with initiating prayer before each board meeting, a practice which continues today.

However, as previously reported, Johnson never seemed to find his niche on the county board until the last couple of years when he became interested in, and was given a lot of credit for initiating the
"working waterman" movement in Dare County, aimed at (1) recognizing and preserving that group's longtime contribution to the county's economy,  and (2) promoting the local seafood catch.

Landfill bear hunting trips on posted
county property were a favorite of
past time of Commisioner Mike Johnson
 while in office.
No doubt it was Johnson's love of fishing, hunting and the outdoors that drew him to the above endeavors, but it was also a kind of 'achilles heel' for him. While serving as a proxy voter on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Council, Johnson ran into trouble double-dipping on his county travel account on several occasions and had to return monies to the county coffers.

And, who can forget Johnson's bear hunts, taken on posted county property, at the mainland landfill, where garbage fatten and corn fed trophy bears were taken, in  a manner only available to a county commissioner with a key to the gate and access to county machinery to assist in dragging the bear(s) out of the landfill.

All in all, Johnson's tenure on the Dare Board of Commissioners was something to behold, but probably no where near as exciting as an annual taxpayer subsidized hunting trip to South Dakota
(subsidized, because Johnson was being paid to attend two meetings per month, all year long).
Let's see, how much $$ does that come to?

So, EOD says, "bon voyage", Commissioner Mike Johnson, we hope you bag yourself a prize prairie dog while you're out there shooting it up in the Dakotas.  And, why not bring one home to each commissioner while you're at it?

Bob Woodard of Kill Devil Hills will be sworn in to replace Johnson at the December meeting, and he will have some interesting hunting boots to fill. No doubt. 'Nuff said.

Footnote: An inquiry by EOD to the chairman of the county board of commissioners about Johnson's November absence has gone unanswered.

Amazon-Saving the Environment

To contact us Click HERE

I love the Russian "nesting dolls". An interesting concept of a very old school artisan craft, now long gone, (like old Swiss watch mechanism's or real German nutcrackers).

But Amazon takes the nesting "cake". The bottom box contained those air filled plastic shipping bladders, which were securing the smaller box. The smaller box contained yet more air bladder cushions which in turn held the very small camcorder battery on the inside.

A company named after a river that flows through some of the most ecologically important habitat on the planet should think a tad more about the waste in their shipping.

Bill Deal passed away in 2003, and sometime co-vocalist Fat Ammons has his own gig, but various former members of Bill Deal and the Rhondel's are still playing that old beach music and sound fantastic under the name "The Original Rhondels". The two horn players on the far right were in the very original group and are on all of their three national hits: "May I", 'What Kind of Fool" and "I've Been Hurt".

OBX Hurricane Prepardness-A Local's Tips

To contact us Click HERE
Outer Bankers pride themselves on taking approaching hurricanes in stride. Currently, a well developed Category 4 is on the way. Here is a mental and actual checklist OBXers go through as a storm approaches.

  • Is Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel here yet? This doesn't indicate a big one is imminent, but local females enjoy seeking out the "weather stud" while he is working. In fact, if Cantore is here, it's a good bet the storm will be minor.
On the other hand, if some lesser known and expendable Weather Channel person shows up, most of us evacuate.

  • OBX males ask, at these times, why is there no Fox Weather Channel sending correspondents that look like their News channel reporters and anchors.
  • Is the onrushing hurricane liberal, conservative, or religious? This must be determined quickly. A left leaning hurricane is bad news, as it moves west (obviously trying to find California) and leaves behind it a mass of destruction allowing politicians to bestow newly minted billions on the local economy. Right-leaning hurricanes move east, costing the taxpayers nothing. Religious hurricanes heed the call of the Rev. Pat Robertson and smite some other town, most likely one that recognizes gay marriages or allows dancing. On rare occasions, a "centrist" hurricane makes landfall, leaving everyone feeling empty.
Once we have gone through the above assessments and arrive at the conclusion a hurricane is on the way, one swings into the preparedness stage:

House Protection:

OBXers use a variety of protection devices, including plywood, wood shutters, and in my case, prefabricated panels. As you can see from this picture, it is important that your panels be safely stacked in a corner of each deck, preferably opposite of the prevailing hurricane wind. Make sure they are well secured, like these are, with multiple bungee cords or other restraining devices. Otherwise, they might damage a neighbor's house, or worse, blow away.

If you believe you have gotten your money's worth from the five consecutive annual 15% increases in your wind and hail premiums, you might want to install your protective devices. Otherwise, place tarp over objets d'art, widescreen TV's, your fishing citations and leave the panels stacked where they are. Your check from the insurance Gods will arrive. Someday. Maybe. It's the only chance you'll ever get some of that money back.

Water:

You need to store some potable water.

Looks good to me. Check.

Lay in supplies. Outer Bankers understand what is important. See how empty the Harris-Teeter lot is 48 hours from the projected brush-by?

Now, see where the real line is?

Don't laugh. As electrical service may be interrupted, bread, which is composed of cereal grains makes for an easy meal. Beer, on the other hand, includes many of the same grains, plus water, supplying two vital live-giving resources at one time.

Fruits are also important to your diet, and will keep without refrigeration, if no other option is available. White fruits, by the way, don't taste as good when warm.

As are ingredients for bourbon steak (cooked on a grill, of course), rum cakes (baked in a gas oven) and tequila over glass (no cooking required). No need to rough it just because the power grid has failed.

And of course, your freezer will keep food for several days without power-- if you refrain from opening it often or for extended periods of time. Fatty foods such as these can be cooked on a grill, maintain body weight and slow down the circulation of blood, making your heart beat much slower in times of stress.

Finally, dried vegetable and plant matter has a long shelf life. These can be chewed, smoked (but not during the storm as they burn too quickly in 100 mph winds). Keep some handy.

And be safe.

2011 Village Realty Employee of the Year

One of the very telling things about nominations for employee awards is who does the nominating. Being nominated by people yuo work directly with as well as those in other departments says a lot. Many times there are two or three nominations for the same person. This years winner received eight. Here are some excerpts from the nominations:

She makes coming to work a pleasure. She is always here to listen and guide us and always gives 150%."

"She keeps everyone's hopes and heads held high"
"She deserves this award because of the long hours and extreme dedication she has shown"

Christine Sawyer has been with Village Realty for five years. During most of that time she excelled as a vacation specialist in the rental department. This spring she accepted a new position as Manger of the Administrative Department at our Guest Operations office in Nags Head. This means she is in charge of the group of people who take and dispatch all of the maintenance calls that come in every day.
It is a very demanding position and Chris clearly led her team through a very busy summer...including a hurricane evacuation and securing of homes...successfully and with glowing reviews from her peers.

Bob Oakes, President of Village Realty and Christine Sawyer

Christine Sawyer is the Village Realty Employee of the Year for 2011.

The 4th Annual George Barnes Oyster Roast was originally scheduled to be held last weekend at Jockey's Ridge State Park parking lot.  Neighbors and friends of Jockey's Ridge have been gathering annually to shuck, bag, help plant and create new environments for oysters in the Pamlico Sound.  This year, however...due to inclement weather the entire weekend the non-profit organization "Friends of Jockey's Ridge" decided to simply give the abundance of oysters away, to anyone willing to come shuck their own, in a FREE Oyster Roast hosted last evening (Thursday, March 8th) at Pamlico Jack's Restaurant at MP 15.5 in Nags Head on the sound.

"Low Pressure" performing Live at Rum Jumper's
Oh we were willing!  With live music performed outside on the Rum Jumper's Pirate's deck by "Low Pressure" featuring the talented Chris Toolan, our own Maslin Seal & Dale Henderson performing familiar deck-party cover tunes combined with the clear and balmy sunset, the entire event offered a wonderful gathering for locals and visitors to mingle, eat roasted oysters with a little Tabasco sauce, or freshly squeezed lemon and feel that sense of Outer Banks community.
It was casual, fun, heartwarming and the sunset was spectacular!  Chris Toolan announced to all gathered, just as the first oysters hit the shucking table, "We have some really important people to thank for attending this evening's event..and that is everyone here!"
